"I never wear anything for any of my boyfriends, I wear it for myself. Totally! I get out of the tub and I put my lotion, I put it for myself and I feel so pretty and I love it! And then I go to bed feeling totally fine."

Listen, there’s something you should know about me… about inception. An idea is like a virus, resilient, highly contagious. The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you.

People really don’t give Britney Spears enough credit when it comes to praising strong ass women. Despite her obvious shortcomings as a vocalist, there’s something that’s just so magnetic about her as a person. There’s something kind of ethereal about her, like she has some kind of sacred light guiding her in this world. She really is the closest thing to that of a living angel on this earth. There’s a quality about her that makes strangers want to reach out and protect her, hold her and help her.

Too often people forget that she was just some young girl growing up in poverty in Kentwood, or how she took on auditions and jobs as a young teenager to keep her family financially afloat by herself in hopes of it helping repair her parents’ breaking marriage. Or how a barely 18-year-old Britney had to deal with if her breasts were or weren’t real being public discourse. How she was slut-shamed and trash-talked for then taking control of her sexuality. That she had to endure her agency of self and her complete piracy being taken away as a “price of fame”, allowing the media and public to make a joke out of several heartbreaks, a failed marriage, her life as a mother and her eventual breakdown. That her crying on television pleading for her and her family to be left alone was meant with snarky remarks about her weight or clothes still remains a cultural low.

She’s a working single mother. She’s proof that you can still experience life and be a mother and happy and someone dealing with mental illness. She encapsulates the entirety of the American Dream and the dark sides of fame. She’s the ultimate survivor. She’s proof that you can lose all you hold dear and still rise above it all, and that some lights cannot be put out, no matter how much darkness surrounds them. Fuck your feminism if it includes mocking a strong ass woman because she had to deal with a breakdown in the spotlight because making pop songs somehow means to you that she’s not allowed to have privacy as a mother and woman.
